I purchased a Fishman AG-125 acoustic guitar pickup off of E-Bay last week. The seller thought it was a AGX-125 which is for 12 string guitars. I was planning on putting it on my old trusty Yamaha 12. Well, it turns out that he was dis-informed and actually sold me a AG-125 ($35.00 which is good price for either pickup). The different pickup was not a problem because my Yamaha 6-string would benefit from the pickup also. The installation required removing the strings, shaping a new saddle to accommodate the extra height and drilling a 15/32 hole (required new drill bit from Sears) where my end pin was.

Now, I have had this Yamaha since 1985 and thought I would “Google” the model number. It turns out that they call this instrument “vintage”. So tonight I spent a few minutes drilling a very large hole in a vintage instrument. My 7 year old had to help me place the input jack in the guitar due to her skinny arm. She thought this was big fun and made the comment on how she might like to work on guitars when she gets older. Daddy informed that there is not a college curriculum for that and she should pursue other interests. She was not concerned that I had the experience of working in a music store and that it paid nothing or you spend what you make on the new stuff coming in the door. She said she would get me a guitar for free…she always thinks about others.

Anyway, the procedure went well and you cannot tell it is installed except that the strap button is now 1/4 jack. I plugged in into my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and it works great! I had been using a Dean Markley sound hole pickup for years but I think it is starting to get “vintage”.

So, if a guitar I had in high school in 1984 is labeled “vintage”, what does that label me?
